Here's the thing. We totally appreciate the sentiment behind making Juneteenth a holiday. We know it was an attempt to acknowledge and support Black people in America. The thing about American holidays though, is that, as a rule, holidays will be commercialized and in the case of Juneteenth, the commercialization is not uplifting. We honestly think it would have been better NOT to make it a holiday. There are a number of racially inequitable systems in America that desperately need attention (like Health Care, Financial and Educational to name a few) much more than the need for a day off work and some poorly branded Juneteenth ice-cream. Oooh and wait till you hear the true story near the end! Y'all we are straight up venting today. We invite you to join us!
