Girrrl... Can I Ask You Something?

Plant Medicine

Episode Summary

Plant medicine is a bit of a buzz word these days. Twanda and Rhumel knew very little about plant medicine before we sat done with Holistic Healing Guide, Althea Lawton-Thompson. Althea answered so many questions for us. What is plant medicine?, What kind of plants are used?, What is the process? Is it just another way to get high? Can you really find emotional healing in the plant medicine.

Questions/Topics:

What is Plant Medicine?
In this conversation we are discussing psychoactive plants. There are plants that have properties in them such as magic mushrooms (psilocybin ), Ayahuasca (DMT - similar to what you see in LSD except occurring naturally),peyote -a cactus  (mescaline ) and Iboga (Ibogaine) that are used for journeying  and for physical, mental, and emotional healing. Ceremonially these entheogens are used for spiritual healing.  Entheogen - Naturally occurring psychoactive substances that grow on their own.

Plant medicine is different from recreational drugs right?

What do you mean when you say the plants have mind-altering properties?

If it truly helps people connect to their spirituality, helps break unhealthy addictions, heals PTSD and depression, why is it illegal in the US?

Since Will and Jada Smith publicly mentioned journeying with Ayahuasca it seems to be more popular.  Can you tell us about this plant medicine?

**FUN FACT: All of the aforementioned plant medicines are legal in Oregon.

What does "journeying" mean?

Are there some people who should stay away from plant medicine?

What can people who are currently on mental health medications do if they are interested in plant medicine? Is there an option for them?

Where can someone safely have a journey?

Where can I get more information?

How did you learn so much about plant medicine?

How can you work FamU in this conversation? (Not a real question but somehow FamU was mentioned)

How can one determine if plant medicine is for them?

Guest notes:

Quotes:

"When you have research hospitals like John Hoskins Hospitals, University Hospitals micro-dosing psilocybin, ayahuasca, ibogaine for their psychiatric patients and for their clients and patients with addictions and cancer and they are saying, 'Look at how efficacious this is'; It's only a matter of time until it is legal like marijuana.
